  CURRENT PROJECTS

Bang Niang Nursery

This nursery houses 30 children aged 0 to 6 years. These children belong to Burmese construction workers and attend the Learning Centre five days a week. The Learning Centre is housed in a single building which acts as the classroom, storeroom, kitchen and bathroom.  The classroom is bare of any furniture and the children sit on the floor during lessons. The play area outside the classroom has no playground furniture and this will be where the first swings and see-saw will be installed.

Proposed Work

1. The single building and play area where the very small children play needs fencing off with a simple rope and bamboo-post structure to keep the children from straying outside the area. The area for use by the children is specified by the landlord.

Damp area due to lack of guttering

2. Guttering needs to be put in place (there is none at present) to prevent rainwater running down the wall face and creating a large black damp area which is what has happened. This can be seen on the left hand side in the photo above - where the wall is black.

3. Nursery wall needs repainting - as seen on left hand side of above photo.

4. The classroom needs a ceiling fan, there is a single floor fan in place at the moment but this is totally inadequate for the 30 children.  There is nothing solid to fix fan to on the ceiling so battening will have to be installed.  Electricity supply needs to be run from  the mains supply.

5. Open Air Extension at front Entrance - wire fencing needs repairing/replacing and made safe for the children, there are gaping holes at present. Need to put some battening across wire to prevent the children from continuously leaning on the wire and therefore creating more gaping holes.

6. Door to bathroom needs repairing - plastic.

7. Door to storeroom needs repairing - timber.

8. School equipment required; books, writing materials, educational toys.

9. There is currently a very basic, small wooden structure sitting at the side of the Centre, we have decided to paint this structure in bright colours and add two swings to the extended arms at top.

Bang Niang Learning Centre (different from Nursery)

Pakarang Learning Centre

This learning Centre houses 50 children aged 0 to 13 and once again all children belong to Burmese construction workers. The current play area is too small to install swings. Permission has been obtained from the landlord to level out the disused area at the rear of the building and install playground furniture.

Proposed Work

1. There is a barbed wire fencing running along the right hand side of the existing play area and any swings would hit this fencing no matter which way they are situated! We intend to build a climbing frame in this area. The disused area needs levelling out and the broken water pipes need repairing and burying under the soil. This is going to be hard work and to date we have 20 volunteers proposing to work on this project.

Yaowawit School

This school is situated in the Kapong area of Phang Nga and houses 85 children aged from 1 to 15.  These include orphans from the tsunami or AIDS, survivors of child abuse and those who have an appalling history of poverty. They have requested a set of swings for the older children as they have an infant set of swings in place already.
